Bert, from Gillingham, served in the Royal Air Force as an air radar technician at RAF Colerne, Wiltshire, from 1953 to 1955. He said: “I wanted to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund as they have been so generous to me and their support has allowed me to maintain my independence for many years. The 11 miles was a huge challenge for me, but I was determined to complete it to help give something back to the Fund. Without the RAF Benevolent Fund’s support, my life would be much harder than it already is.”
Bert completed his challenge by using a MOTOmed exercise machine, which was specially developed for people with limited mobility. Users can train sitting in a wheelchair or from a chair. The money will go to help the Fund with projects such as its Telephone Friendship Groups service, which allows more veterans to join a weekly call. The Fund has also made £2,500 available for each RAF station to provide an activity and wellbeing pack for RAF children and launched Airplay Connect, an online version of its youth support service.
