‘During my time in Neuro Critical Care after a brainstem stroke I was offered use of a MOTOmed over-the-bed bike at a time when I couldn’t sit up or bear my own weight. The bike allowed me to exercise my legs that had wasted enormously after being in a locked-in state.
The benefit was that the amount of power I could apply to my legs was completely adjustable and I could start off low. Also, because each leg could by controlled separately I was able specifically to work my left side which was considerable weaker than my right side but soon caught up.
I very quickly was able to spend an hour a day cycling and this kick-started my rehab so that I was soon able to stand in an harness and eventually walk with a frame. I’m certain that without access to the MOTOmed my progress would have been considerably more limited. ‘
